Direct software update of bus modules

Introduction to the topic

To update bus modules on the Fischer Panda CAN bus, you usually transfer the software update files to the generator control first. Only the generator control can distribute updates to other bus modules.

With the direct software update, in this tutorial we introduce you to a method, you can use to update individual bus modules directly. You will use the fpControl panel to send one or more update files directly to a bus module.

Transferring update files to the panel

The control panel works like an USB removable medium on which you can store update files for all Fischer Panda CAN Bus modules.

  • Connect the xControl panel/fpControl panel to a PC/Laptop using a cable with USB mini connector.

Intermediate result: The panel is opened as drive “XC_PANEL” in Windows Explorer.

  • Copy the update files (*.upd) to this drive.
  • Disconnect the drive safely from the PC/Laptop.

Transferring an update file to a bus module

Requirement: The update file for the bus module must be located on the control panel.

  • Open sub menu “panel”.
  • Select option “update” and confirm.
  • Select option “select destination” and confirm.
  • Select from the list the bus module, which should receive a software update and confirm.
  • Select option “select files” and confirm.
  • Select the update file for the bus module from the list and confirm with “OK”.

Intermediate result: The transmission of the update file to the selected bus module begins.

  • Wait until the progress bar reaches 100% and the “FILETRANSFER ACTIVE” window is closed.
  • Switch off generator control.

Carrying out the update of the bus module

Requirements
  • The update file must have been transferred to the bus module.
  • If you want to update the panel itself, note that the manual update option must be allowed on this panel: panel > update > allow manual update > yes.

The update of a bus module can be executed after switching on the supply voltage again.
  • Switch the panel on.

A pop-up window opens. You see

  • the module ID,
  • the address of the module on the Fischer Panda CAN bus,
  • the serial number of the bus module and
  • the current as well as the available new software version.
  • Confirm the start of the software update with the arrow-down key (ok) or cancel the update with the arrow-up key (abort).
NOTICE
Property damage to the bus module due to interruption of the supply voltage.
If the power supply is interrupted during the software update, the bus module may be damaged.
► Do not switch off the supply voltage until the progress bar has reached 100% and the “FILETRANSFER ACTIVE” window is closed.
  • Intermediate result: The update of the bus module is running.

The pictures show the process of the update using the example of a control panel.
