Data Sheet »Communication Interface CI – NMEA 2000®«

Module for the connection of the fpCAN to an external NMEA 2000® network.

Fischer Panda part number: 0031409

Product Description

The »Communication Interface CI – NMEA 2000®« manages the communication between the »fpCAN« and an external NMEA 2000® network. The interface protects the internal »fpCAN« by filtering the data from the external NMEA 2000® network.

The »fpCAN« (represented by »FP CAN BUS 1«) and the NMEA 2000® network (represented by »USER CAN BUS« and »FP CAN BUS 2« which are connected in parallel) are galvanically isolated.

The »fpControl CI NMEA 2000®« is powered by the »fpCAN«.

NOTE:
»FP CAN BUS 1« is the port for the j1939 fpCAN Bus and it is galvanically isolated from »USER CAN BUS« and »FP CAN BUS 2«.

»USER CAN BUS« and »FP CAN BUS 2« both are ports for the NMEA 2000® network. »USER CAN BUS« and »FP CAN BUS 2« are connected in parallel and the are NOT galvanically isolated from each other.
Pin assignment of »USER CAN BUS«

NMEA 2000® network, 5-pin Phoenix Contact socket.

The electrical interface for the NMEA 2000® network (USER CAN BUS) is labelled directly on the printed circuit board:

Alternative connection for the external NMEA 2000® network, RJ45 socket. The »FP CAN BUS 2« is parallel connected to the »USER CAN BUS«. It can be used to connect the NMEA 2000® network via RJ45 plug.

The external CAN Bus must be terminated. This can be achieved by a terminating resistor in the second RJ45 socket.

Rotary Coding Switch (not used for changing Instances)

The rotary coding switch is used to add an offset to the start address for the address claiming process.

Default setting: Rotary coding switch in position »0«. No offset is added to the start address.

Alternative Setting: Rotary coding switch in a position not equal to »0«:
[start address] = [position of the rotary coding switch] * 16.

NOTE:
The NMEA 2000® address and the NMEA 2000® instance are two important concepts in the NMEA 2000® network that have different functions:

Each unit on an NMEA 2000® network is assigned a unique NMEA 2000® address during the address claiming process. This address is ranging from 0 to 251 and is used to control communication between devices and ensure that data is sent to the correct recipients.
Note that the NMEA 2000® addresses are assigned automatically when a device joins the network and may change when new devices are added or removed.

The NMEA 2000® instance number is used to distinguish multiple identical devices on the network. For example, if you have two Fischer Panda generators, each would be given a different instance number to distinguish them from each other. The NMEA 2000® instance numbers are manually configured and remain constant unless manually changed.

In summary: The NMEA 2000® address is used for unique identification and communication in the network, while the NMEA 2000® instance number is used to distinguish between multiple identical devices.

DIP Switch

The DIP switch is used for setting the NMEA 2000® Generator Class.
