These are influenced by the user or a higher-level control system. Furthermore, the configuration of the generator and the Hybrid Charger has an influence on the operating behavior.

The operation states of the VS-Generator are based on the fpControl state machine. Not all possible states are used or needed in the VS-Generator-System.
The current state is displayed on the start screen of the fpControl-Panel. Additionally the current system state can be seen in the fpCAN-Bus message »PROPB01 – Generator System Information«, PGN 65281 (0xFF01), Byte 2.

The individual states of operation are shown in the figure below. There are certain actions that can only be performed by a user that operates the FP-Hardware components or hard wired and controlled by a higher-level control system. This includes switching on the starter battery system, waking-up the VS-Generator-System or actuating an emergency stop switch.

Starter Battery off

First, the starter battery system must be switched on. In the case of longer downtimes, the starter battery is usually separated from the generator system by a battery disconnect switch.

Sleep-Mode

After switching on the starter battery, the VS-Generator-System is in sleep mode. In this mode, the control system and the fpCAN-Bus of the generator system are off. It can be turned on by a wake-up pulse. This can be done via the fpControl-Panel or via activating the wake-up function (selecting the »2 controls 1 mode«) of the communication interface or hardwired.

At wake-up, the VS-Generator-System initiates the standby mode. First, the J1939-typical address claiming is carried out and the existing components on the fpCAN-Bus are recognized and update files are searched for. For this purpose, the Hybrid Charger is switched on by the fpControl for a certain period. The Hybrid Charger is then switched off to keep consumption as low as possible.

The fpControl and the fpCAN-Bus are now active. Operating parameters and configuration options can be viewed or set via the fpControl-Panel or a higher-level control system. All the other operating states are controlled via the fpCAN-Bus and the fpControl.

Operation States

Preheat

As soon as a start command is sent to the fpControl via fpCAN-Bus, the engine start is prepared. Depending on engine type, preheating and fuel pump are activated or if an ECU is presend the ECU initiates the preheat state.

Start

The starter is then starting the engine. During the starting phase, the Hybrid-Charger remains off. If it is still switched on because the start command is given during the 30s after the start of the generator system, the converter is switched off by the fpControl.

Warmup-I

The Warmup-I state is initiated to build up oil pressure and an oil film in the engine. It will be checked whether an engine speed is available by the fpControl. During the Warmup-I state, the setpoint of the DC output power is limited to zero power. The engine speed is limited to engine idle RPM.

The Warmup-I state is aborted as soon as a certain engine temperature is reached. If this is not reached, it will be canceled after a certain time and switched to Warmup-II State. These values are dependent on the motor type.

Warmup-II

In Warmup-II state, the engine and the internal cooling system should be brought up to operating temperature without exposing the engine to high loads and speeds. This benefits the service life of the engine. The engine speed is limited to half of the speed range during this phase. The DC output power is limited to half of the rated power.

The Warmup-II state is aborted as soon as the operating temperature specific to the engine type is reached. Typically, this is in the area where the thermostat of the internal cooling circuit opens.

Run

In the run state, the generator runs normally and without restrictions. Depending on the set operating mode and the configuration, the DC output is controlled via the fixed setpoints and limits or controlled live via the fpCAN-Bus.

Cooldown

As soon as a stop command is received from the fpControl-Panel or via the fpCAN-Bus, the fpControl initiates the cool down state. The system continues to run for a short delay to cool down generator components such as the turbocharger and the power electronics. The setpoint of the DC output power is limited to zero power. The engine speed is limited to engine idle RPM. The time of the cool down state depends on the engine type and is preset in the fpControl. After cooling down the VS-Generator-System switches back to the standby state.

Error

As soon as an error occurs, the error state is initiated immediately. The motor and the power electronics are switched off. A corresponding error message is displayed on the fpControl-Panel. It is only possible to switch back to standby state from error state. This only happens if the error is acknowledged by the user via the fpControl-Panel or by a higher-level control system. Alternatively, restarting the system can clear the error message.

During operation of the VS-Generator-System, various operating states are passed through.
